Hiya Gang!

Was going through some old stuff, and ran across this tooth I found near the beach in Central California almost 35 yrs ago...Hard to believe I still had it..LOL!!

I thought it might have been from a walrus, but I was told it was bone, and possible a LARGE herbivore.

Any thoughts??

Thanks!

That may be a good match.

After turning the picture of THIS tooth upside down, it matches quite well with the top right figure (#27?).

Thanks for the great link...It looks to definitley be a horse tooth ...Now I just need to figure out how old the horse was as it is waaaaay too large to be from a domestic animal. LOL!! (how scary would that be?)

Well, after more research, it seems the tooth belonged to Dinohippus, a North American species of horse that existed 12-6 million years ago.
I have contacted two museums of natural history with the photos to verify the information. It will be pretty cool if I get a verification. I have offers to loan the tooth for testing or display purposes.
Will give an update once I know for sure..

Thanks for the link to help me figure this out!!

Here's a horse tooth I found on our farm . It's pretty big , but yours is huge ! Yours would have been even bigger if it still had the roots . Nice find , Tvic !

Yep, it's a prehistoric horse tooth.

Somewhere around this house, I have a cigar box full of them that we found as kids and when I used to work with a peleontologist hunting fossils. Here in Nebraska, along some of the rivers, they used to be quite plentiful. If I can find the box that I have my fossils in, I also have a petrified hoof and toe bone to the animal that the tooth belonged to. If I can find them, I'll take a picture and post it here.
