I took my old whites coinmaster to a friends house today and found this in the woods. There is no reason for it to be there that I know of. No graveyards around. It is 5 3/4 , brass, bottom broken loop on back is threaded. Is it a grave marker and who would have these on their grave?

Except for a very few on the forum, most any post regarding the deceased American Soldier is very serious Angelo. We're talking about a hero here whether in battle or not. Monty

I agree Monty. Its a shame that someone would take a monument like this from it rightful place. The good thing is the American Legion is usually very active in keeping the graves marked appropriately if something is removed/stolen.

I totally agree with you Monty. Was just trying to state that all postings could/should be as cordial, to the point and as informative as this one was.

The threaded part is broken maybe it was replaced and the old one was played with by children. Is everyone so jaded that there minds default to fowl play as an explanation for everything?

I Agree this Could be a disgarded one.

I Have also seen them Planted in front of American Legions.

Could have been Run over & Thrown on the trash pile.

Go to any Legion show it to them
Tell them where you Dug it & Ask
If they want it.
these are the Property of the Legion
unless they say "Keep It"

Have to agree with Jeff on this one! You need to take it to the AL and see if they want it back before you try to give it to the land owner.

And to answer a question put forth on here, "No" not everyone is Jacked Up and thinks the worst right off the bat.

First of all, I would like to say that no, I don't think the worst in every situation. This piece could have very well just been a discarded one and was replaced with a new one. Not doubting that. In my area, and I'm sure across the nation, cemetary vandals seem to make their rounds every couple of years or so. Usually a bunch of teenagers having a testosterone contest. They would take the old headstones like the one pictured in my post above and break them off, they would steal the american flags and placards, like the American Legion one. Pretty sorry stuff to say the least. Being that this one that was found was nowhere near a cemetary, it seemed the most likely scenario that it was stolen and discarded, just out of pure meanness. If it had been one that was replaced, I would think that the good folks at the American Legion wouldn't just toss the old one. Just my thoughts. Never intended to ruffle feathers.
I agree that a good step would be to take it to your local American Legion post and try to return it. HH

I Was told around here they send them to Sunbury when Damaged
And a New one is sent as a Replacement.
What they do with them I don't know.
Throw them in the trash ?

Sunbury must be the Local Headquarters.

However Does Everyone in the Country Know this ?
Cemetery Grounds Keepers, someone Mowing Grass,
Are they all aware of This ? Or may some just
throw them on the Trash Pile figuring
this is what you Do ? I Know I didn't
know till Recently.

Today they don't even Replace with the same type.
They Cement the Plate in the ground facing up.

However as I said earlier.
I Have seen a Variety.
one for each War on Posts in front of american Legions.

I didn't read the post as accusatory, merely seeking information as to how best to handle it. I think anyone who thinks otherwise is just making something out of nothing. There you go Angelo, just exactly what you were talking about! M ::) nty

Mr. 72 cheyenne, you did not even come close to having ruffled any feathers. I feel that we are now working on the possible scenario of the find.

I agree that a good step would be to take it to your local American Legion post and try to return it. HH

I bet the American Legion would be very thankful. Keep us posted if you would taz420

american legion will take "proper" care of said item --its "theirs" after all * -- being its damaged they will get it repaired or replaced -- I would say the local "legion" post is its "proper" place to be at this point . since you can not find where it came from plus the fact its "broken" and at the very least needs "repair" --I'm sure they will refurb it if possible and see its reused / issued again .-- they reject it you can keep it with a clear , clean feeling about it .

This is a very probably case. I never gave that scenario a thought.

I never felt accused, just wanted to clear up that I don't always look for the worst in a situation, or think first foul play (which I guess I did). BTW Monty, aren't you ready for this AR/OK weather to stop the roller coaster ride? ;D

Didn't know for sure if I ruffled feathers or not, I promise I'm not here to make enemies. Just to contribute where I can, in which sometimes I'm right and sometimes I'm wrong. It's all good in the end though. I really like jeff of pa's scenario. That is most likely what has happened. HH guys.

I never intended to keep anything from this mans property and returned it to him soon after my original post, as I told him I would do the day I dug it.
It was just a nice place to try to get the hang of this old coinmaster , no coins yet though.
I would have thought it more important to try to return if it had a name and would be put back on that grave, but think they are slowly being replaced as Jeff said and would probably be scraped anyways . I will pass your suggestions to the person who has it.
Thanks for your help.

It's in his hands now.
