LAKE GEORGE, NY -- Bateaux Below, a nonprofit organization that studies historic shipwrecks in Lake George, has been awarded a $15,000 grant from the Fund for Lake George.

The grant will help pay for the group's work with side-scan sonar, used to locate and record shipwrecks and other submerged cultural resources.

The fund also committed an annual grant of $5,000 for general support.

"The $15,000 grant is the largest grant ever received by Bateaux Below, and we are indeed very grateful to the Fund for Lake George," said Joseph W. Zarzynski, the group's executive director.

"Lake George has one of the best collections of sunken vessels in the country, and this grant will help in our archaeological studies of these noteworthy shipwrecks."

The underwater archaeology team has been conducting a shipwreck inventory of the lake since 1988. Once the inventory is completed, probably over the next few years, Bateaux Below will be able to determine how best to use its resources toward the interpretation and historic preservation of the lake's underwater treasures.
