Grandpa received a Bounty Hunter Search Master 505 for Christmas in 1992 (LOL). He has never used it and it is still wrapped in the box. He gave it to my son today (age 8 and already an avid coin collector). Do you think the darn thing will find a coin? It looks so light...my son thinks he'll find gold with it...can he? ??? We don't live any where near a beach...will it work okay for general use along the Oregon trail?

Although I'm far from being an experienced MDer, my first detector was a Radio Shack given to me as a gift in the late 1970's & probably cost $50 or $60. I found my father's wedding ring that was lost for years that was probably 3" down. Follow the instructions & I'm sure it will be a good machine for a beginner. It has to be far more advanced than the one I have from the 70's. Good Luck with it.

Well, remember, It was from his GrandPa, out of an act of love.
I don't much care for BH myself, but remember it was FROM HIS GRANDPA and the love it was given with, means something. I say its time to take it out of its box and have fun with it.

I don't know if the 505 model in 1992 is like the 505 I have (bought it about 3 yrs ago) but it is a coin finding rascal! If it rings out a high tone. 98% of the time it has found a dime, quarter, or silver ring. Great little starter machine. I still hunt with mine all the time. Take your son to a park or school and turn him loose with it. You will be surprised at the amount of coins it will ring up. Have fun and Happy Hunting. ;D

he ought to do ok with it. enough to have fun with im sure. if later on, he really seems to be interested in the hobby you can always upgrade to something better then.

I had a Lonestar then moved up a bit to a Pioneer 505. I find lots with it. I could pay alot more for another but this thing does just fine for me.
