I read a book a few years ago detailing the "reported" deaths in the Grand Canyon area since deaths were first reported in that area. One of 'em comes from the early half of the 1900's (pre 1930 I believe, lost the book when I moved from AZ to OR), where a man got lost in the canyon for several weeks. According to the report, he stumbled across a cave with several canvas bags stuffed with gold nuggets. Also according to the report, he had several nuggets in his pocket when he finally made it back to society. He died as a result of the rough experience being lost, but not before telling the nurse about what he'd found.
I lived in that area for 15 years, and always wanted to go looking. Never got the chance though.
