grampa's quarters

My wife just picked up a box of her grandfather's loose change. I noticed that some of the quarters have a different sound, I'm only assuming that is because of a higher silver content (I don't know anything about coins). All the quarters are pre 1965, some date back to 1942. Can anyone enlighten me on what I have here? Thanks.

Re: grampa's quarters

If they are indeed between 1942 & 1964 they are all 90% silver quarters!

To expand a little on the posts above. All 1964 and before dimes, quarters, halves and dollar coins were 90% silver. Nickels 1942(most)-1945 were 35% silver. Half dollars from 1965-1970 were 40% silver. Some other coins since have also been silver but those were not intended for general circulation and as such are not encountered too often. Check out the excellent coinflation site recommended above to see how much these coins are worth over face value. Welcome to T-Net.

Re: grampa's quarters

Keep that silver! Silver quarters are hard to come by.
