Top one would get AU, possibly MS but I doubt it. The bottom one would get XF.

This is my opinion anyway :)

Top one is a MS, the bottom an AU to XF.

Toning doesn't affect the grade, and I think the top one has a smooth character to it. Most people these days are looking for blast white, however. Unfortunately that has lead to an awful lot of cleaned coins out there.

It is hard to say. Neither are MS but I don't believe either are under EF-45. The 1898 has some wear on the obverse but the reverse looks good. The 1879, on the reverse, the breast is almost bare. The obverse looks pretty good, which is usually the opposite. When the reverse is worn the obverse is usually really worn. You have to watch Morgans though because some have weak strikes.

I understand the toning is simply in the "eye of the beholder" and really matters little towards value and not at all towards grading... am I right?

Right! They will put "toning" on the grading, but it won't affect the grade. What price you get above the graded value for the toning is set by whoever is buying the coin. Essentially what they're willing to pay for it. I've seen some beautifully toned coins that I'd drop some cash for, but most of it isn't that spectacular IMO. The toning that seems to have value is the rainbow toning.

Also, it's kind of a Grey area of the market. I mean, in 50 years toning might be worthless...who knows.

Top coin will grade (XtraFine) and bottom coin will go (Fine) according to the ANA gradeing book

I'd say they are both Very Fine. There doesn't appear to be hardly any wear, especially around the high points.

Some of you guys should not be commenting on coin grades. This is a certified PCGS Fine 1879. I think there is a huge difference in the 2 coins. The other is a certified EF.

If you have a rainbow toned coin, it will definetly raise the price of your silver coin. There is also a plum color toning and some other "hues" but rainbow is number one. Mainly coins left in coin books for 20 years or so will be toned some what or totally.
