So they whacked it with a mallet Like I drive a chisel maybe?
 

I believe so.The other type was pointed on the end with a completely different function.They were in use for thousands of years so there is bound to be a few different designs.

Yes natchitoches I believe some were.I'm leaning towards the idea that the broader more open gouges definitely were just by design.Some on the other hand were used to sharpen stakes for fish weirs and other structures.I can envision holding one and running it down limbs to break unwanted brancbes off.
