The "cricket" lighter gained traction near that time.
Those who did not like Zippo's or more so lighter fluid burning their leg ; butane was great.
Paper matches fell out of favor and wood ones were not as convenient as a quick flick of a sparkwheel.

Cigarette machines often had a " Thank You" button . Not sure if the pull type plunger ones did.....
Per each purchase ,pushing the thank you button provided a book of matches.

Us kids had free matches!!! No questions asked.

Sixth grade a classmate was called "match". Always had a strike anywhere match in his lips. With a strict teacher even.

Some of those older ones had some nice artwork

I remember this one scene from a John Wayne movie about WW2 pilots. They get back from a mission and everybody gets in front of the plane. They start getting out the smokes, lighting up and in seconds you could hardly see the guys for the smoke lol.

I remember a crackdown on kids buying ciggs at one store. But they would still sell us pipe tobacco and rolling papers.... A small pouch of Masterpiece tobacco was a nickle I think.
The cigg machines were often at business entrances. Never had anyone say anything for feeding one 35 cents for a pack. And complimentary matches...

A friends Dad drove truck. We bought cartons for 2 bucks a piece sometimes.

Not since Superman died.
