Button looks like a WW I General Enlisted Person. Try to wash the back off & see who made it.

the only wording I can make out is prov. r.i. there is other writing but I cant make it out.

Your button is a US Army "Great Seal" button, which is strictly from the 20th-Century. The first version was adopted for service in 1902, and lacked a raised rim (which yours has). The rimless version dates from 1902 to 1910. The World War One era to 1923 version has a rim, AND the button's front had a "black finish." The version you found has a rim, but seems to lack even a trace of "black finish" in your photo. So, it dates from 1923 onward (up to the present day).

By the way, the Officers' version was goldplated. Yours seems to have none, and if that is correct, it is the Enlisted-men's version (private, corporal, sergeant).

There is more than one candidate for your button's "Prov. RI" (Providence Rhode Island) backmark in the long list of Great Seal button backmarks started in the What-Is-It forum by BigCypressHunter, here: http://www.treasurenet.com/forums/what/112828-great-seal-button-backmarks-help.html
It's a very lengthy discussion, so click on the last page of it to see the most up-to-date version of the backmarks list.

The candidates are:
The Austin Co. Prov. RI
Jewelers Products Corp Prov. RI
James C. Doran & Sons Providence RI

Those kind of buttons are cool to find. I found one just a few weeks ago too. Congrats on your find and thanks for the info Cannonballguy.

thanks for the info, mine also has the word jewelers in it .

You're welcome. In the photo, your button looks grey-ish, and is uncleaned, so I can't be certain whether it has "black finish" on its front, or not. If it does, it is World War One to 1923.

BigCypressHunter's list of Great Seal backmarks mentions that a Great Seal button with the "Jewelers Products Corp. Prov. RI" backmark was found on a World War One battlefield in France.

the front looks black to me, and thanks again for all the great info.button 3.jpg
