maybe i should have posted this above in the knapping forum, but its too boring up there...Was out near an old iron furnace area I like to piddle around in yesterday eve.. I was looking for old bricks that lay around this area from the old rd that went through to the furnace and small town that used to be there in the 1800s. I thought while i was there i would get some slag...this stuff was a byproduct of the iron making process. Its pretty similar to obsidian. I don't knapp points much and haven't tried one for years but when i take a notion ill see what i can get out of these. made a few out of this stuff maybe 10 years ago and they turned out pretty neat. the bricks in picture are not ones i was looking for.......the ones i was after say athens brick co on them and are pretty cool

Your right it is boring up there... Anyhow I have tried several attempts to knap slag and it never works. All of the stuff I have found has to much air in it. I think it because it is made from coal furanaces melting rock it cools to fast and develops microscopic air pockets. Where obsidian is form from a much hotter magma. It basically crumbles.

your absolutely right i meant that it looks like obsidian..... its definately hard to get anything out of a pile like that. ive already reduced it to nothing

I have however several years ago knapped a couple ok points out of some of the purple colored , and was working on one that was green and it ended up in a cross shape so i knapped a little more and made a nice little green cross with clear inclusions, so i tumbled it and made a necklace out of it. Gave it to my neighbor. and yeah the stuff crumbled and is full of air holes. kinda like my brain.
