Went to a new park today. About 3/4 of it was underwater from all the rain we've had the last week. The other 1/4 was mostly mud. But I found a toy truck, 42 cents in clad and a wheat 1958-D. The wheat was a pleasant surprise since it's a newer park.

Also got the usual pull tabs and other trash.

When I go to the parks I stick to detecting the play areas that are covered with wood chips. I don't want to dig in the grassy areas and upset anyone. Do the rest of you do this or do you hit the grassy areas also?

If you do go into the grass do you limit yourself to not going beyond a certain depth?

It sounds like you got soaked with all that water!..... Plus your finding stuff, thats all that matters...... 8)

I hunt the chips and grass. But, I only hunt the grass if it is not dried out. I have found that if you dig a small plug sometimes you have to make it bigger to find your target which can get messy. Cut a 3 to 4" plug and give yourself room to work...it usually ends up looking much better than if you tried to make a small hole. Plus, a bigger plug tends to hold together better than a small one. If the target is near the surface I use a probe and coin popper to get it. I don't limit my depth, be rarely go beyond 6". Try to keep one side of the plug connected, use a towel to hold the dirt and step on the plug when done...if you did a good job it is difficult to see where you dug the hole.

Same here....I was quite nervous yesterday when I hunted a yard..cause I'm usually hunting where noone has been for quite a while but before I left I scanned over the place and couldn't tell where I'd been...so I must have done OK. Go ahead and hunt it. ;)

Congrats on your finds!

nice job on the finds!I usually hunt all over the parks, all I have ever been told by the parks dept. here is "fill your holes"which of course I always do.Try the sandy area around the ball diamond(if the park has one)I have found these areas overlooked.

I guess the wet weather can't hold you back. Congrats on the finds. Vern

THEY USE SMALL PEBBLES IN OUR PLAY AREAS. I ONLY HUNT THE GRASS WHEN NO ONE IS THERE [EARLY WEEKEND DAYS] SO NO ONE FREAKS OUTAND I CUT A LARGER PLUG OUT AND USE A PIN POINTER AND STEP ON THE PLUG TO GET LEVEL AGAIN. I ALSO FOUND THAT LESS WELL CARED FOR GRASS AREAS PLUGS JUST TEND TO FALL APART WHEN I CUT THEM OUT. ALL I CAN DO IS PUT IT BACK IN THE HOLE THE BEST I CAN.
