Must have been more the a few pieces I would say.

Way to go Doug! Al I ever find at garage sales are mismatched Barbie shoes.

That's it.

I'm moving to Tennessee.

I swear, I am the only dude in the tri-county area that does not own a loupe. There isn't even a single chrome plated piece anywhere that at least 29 people haven't inspected with a loupe before I see it.

It's the same story here. Of all the pieces I have looked at, I have only cherrypicked sterling or coin silver flatware maybe 3-4 times ever. I have bought it at other times too but those times I was just in the right place at the right time. Got lucky.

Hey Ben, I think you nailed it, it is all about being in the right place at the right time with a little luck thrown in! Good Luck!

That is how I got into this business.

I had never been to a yardsale or estate sale. I was going home from metal detecting and see an estate sale sign, which I follow. I go in and see a pile of spoons at the countertop (it is a business run estate sale) I go back out to my car and get my loupe. Then I start looking at the spoons. A worker says they are all plated, I look more anyway. I found one i liked and asked how much. I think she said $2 and I offered $1 (I was even cheap back then) she accepted and I walked out with a silver tea spoon. I was hooked.

I loved the, "That's how I got started", post, Dan. That should be a thread. What got us into or hooked on the hobby. I'm not even sure I remember my first yard sale??? I remember my wife's first big score. I might even have to go back and look at my first posts in this section to see. What do people think, should it be a thread? But either way, loved the story, Dan.

I got started with robots. I was in the antique district of our small town and one of the shops had a cart with 4 robot arms on it. The owner's son acquired them from his school. 1 of them was really old and in bad repair. Another was not terrible, but had broken cables. The other two worked just fine. I bought them all for $150. I ended up selling one of them, a Scorbot ER-3 for $600 (mine had the controller/power supply which most of the ones on ebay do not include). I sold a working Teachmover robot for $150. A broken one for $100, and the other broken robot for around $50. So, $900 for $150! The Scorbot actually went to India - the buyer arranged shipping via his DHL account.

After that score, I wanted to do more buying and selling. Auctions are ok sometimes, but garage sales are where you can find your biggest profit margins. That's how I got my start.
