Metal Detecting
I've really been slacking so far this year and have only been out metal detecting 1 time before yesterday, so i decided to kick it into high gear and make up for some lost time. Yesterday i decided that i had to do at least one cold call, so i headed to an old part of town and graciously asked a woman who lived in an 1860's home if i could detect her yard and she was more than happy to let me....Detected that small yard for an hour or so with only a wheatie and a few "whats-its?" to show for it. Disappointed, but thankful, i headed home. I was determined to find something worthwhile, so i decided to try get permission to hunt on a property that dates back to 1833 and is now an Inn with the foundation of an old general store on the property. The chances were pretty slim because i had a run-in with the owner 3 years ago when i parked on his grass and he scolded me heavily for "ruining" his lawn (I didn't). The owners are a very nice older couple in their 60's who luckily they had not remembered me :laughing7: but still had said no because they didn't want me getting hurt around the foundation. I understandingly said thank you anyway and got to talking with the owner's wife about school and she asked which college i attend. I told her and then everything changed, apparently she taught at my college and instantly her mind changed and i was now allowed to hunt ;D I spent all of 15 minutes in the buggy foundation area and hit a plethora of targets (which i did not dig (yet)), but got one solid dime signal 4 inches deep and dug away. To my surprise this little beauty popped out of the hole, my first BUST anything!!!!! My previous oldest silver was a 1925 Mercury dime and my oldest coin a 1833 Large Cent. I showed the owner and got permission to come back on another day (with bug spray lol). I am ecstatic and cannot wait to get back there today. More pics of the location and hopefully more finds will be added. Any help on the "whats-its' would be much appreciated :) I know image 1/2 is an old tootsie toy called the "wedge dragster" still with original black paint lol.

Oh, It's an 1820 bust dime btw and the coin is VERY uncleaned lol. I plan on keeping it that way. Just for S's and G's, would the tinfoil/baking soda method be harmful to clean this with? It's only tarnish and a little dirt on the coin. Should i clean it more? I don't plan on it as of now it is in a 2x2.

Nice work. Nice ride you found there as well. Any date on the car? For the coin I would keep it as is in my opinion. Doesnt look like it will cause a problem as it is. I could be wrong. The only coin I found was a merc and I ran it under some water, dried it and put it in a coin sleeve.

I would be cleaning that coin. It's not a key date and has been holed so in my opinion you would only be improving on the coin with cleaning. Go for it...hit it with the foil and salt water...

Congratulations on your First Bust Dime. :icon_thumleft:

nice find :icon_thumleft: , i wouldn't clean it, remember if you want to clean it you can't turn back and make the same patina ever again, but if you don't clean it you always have the decision to keep the tarnish or leave it, but if you remove the tarnish the coin will be almost worthless afterwords, i have seen this done capped bust dime probably worth allot more with the patina (probably 5 times as much, that is just a guess), but when they took the patina off it looked much worse and it became almost worthless.

persistance pays off! I always try to find something in common with the person I am asking and this just shows that it works. Let us know when you go back and keep posting your finds.

put it in some hydrogen peroxide or acetone. it wont affect the metal but will remove anything organic like dirt

very nice coin! :icon_thumright:

:headbang: Still on my wish list. Awesome coin.

Thanks for all the awesome replies!! I may try to just get a little more dirt off and then leave it as-is. Hopefully i'll be able to add to this thread when i get back from hunting this area again tonight! :)

No date on the car I'm afraid lol. It does date at least back to the 1960's, perhaps a little earlier but not much.

Man....I wanted to hear about you getting arrested. ;D Oh well, great finds.

awesome! Good ole fashioned conversation helps more in this hobby than anything! People want/need a connection many times to let us hunt their places.. WTG

Just an FYI.

Back in the 1980s up into the early 90s, I lived on some land that was known to be the winter encampment area of the Yosemite Miwoks. After a heavy rain, I'd take a stroll around the apprx. 3 acres of land, taking a careful look at the gopher hills. I found a lot of trade beads dating back to the 18th and 19th centuries. And, on occasion, I'd get lucky and find a seated half dime or dime. The point being, all of the ones I found had a hole punched in them, just like your find.

This has led me to believe that if a coin has a hole "punched" through it, it was probably worn by a Native American. Either decoration or ornament.

Great find. Keep it as is, and treasure it. Thanks for posting!!
