I would guess bridle rosette or concho. It is the right size, shape, and metal type... The iron hook/loop/pin/fastener broke, then whatever was left simply rusted away.

would it fit in the time period? I have found two large brass buttons,and two small buttons,one brass buckel ,this item, a 1786 Conn. Copper Cent,,several hand made nails.scraps of blue ceramic dishes,several handmade bricks,peices of what looks like an old iron pot.(all in a 20FT.x20Ft. area.

People have been dressing up horses with shiny trinkets for as long as they have been riding them. Pretty cool that you found two of them that match.
