Got a tricky one for you

Saw this post on Facebook from the London Mudlarkers and thought it might be bottle related. It's pottery for sure and almost looks like a clay pipe stem has been inserted in the bottle neck.Keep in mind this came from the foreshore of the Thames so the time period and origin can be a really mixed bag. An "a" is scratched into the vessel.
