Got a Little Silver Today. Actually a Lot

My wife and I went to her great aunt's house today. There was a tornado that hit fallston, Md, where she lives. So we drove the 3 hours to check on her. To make a long story short, I was moving some boxes off of the cellar floor and she had a pile that she was going to toss out. I happened to look in one and saw a bag of coins. I pulled out the bag and it was full of Mercury dimes. I told her what they were and she said I could have them. So I asked if I could have the whole box and she said, "Sure".

After we got home I tore into it. I pulled out all the silver first and organized them.

I am totally amazed at what I found. I am taking the entire day tomorrow to look at each and every one of the coins. So far I have pulled out (pictured on the table). These are all pre-'64 coins that I pulled.

8 "Pocket Piggies" that have 30 Mercury dimes each in them, from 1917-1945
Plus the loose make a total of 365 Mercury dimes.
44 Barber Dimes
6 Walking Liberties Halfs
8 Liberty Halfs
24 1964 Kennedy Halfs
16 franklin Halfs
4 Barber Quarters
6 Standing Quarters
61 Washington Quarters
2 1865 3 Cents
1 1858 Half Dime
1 1835 Dime
3 pounds of Roosevelt dimes (in the Ziplock bag)
3 Uncirculated Carson City Morgans, in the blue boxes, 1882, 1883,1884
30 1921 Morgan Dollars including a '21D and a '21S
4 1879 Morgan Dollars
27 Peace Dollars including my favorite, a 1923S !!!!

I am amazed to say the least. Thats 600 silver coins, not including the 3 POUNDS of Roosevelts!! I still haven't gone through the other 7 boxes that are all large cent, Buffalo nickels, pennies, sets and foreign coins.
Now, I realize that many off these are in "not so good" of shape, (mainly the Mercury Dimes) but most of them are in very good shape and I am really happy, especially all the Dollars, Halfs and Quarters.
I called and told her what I found and she said, "They are all yours, enjoy".
Once i go through the rest I will post more pics and stuff.

Wow man. Great score on all that silver.

Thanks! She is 90 years old and these were her deceased husbands. She is "sorting" things. She is quite aware of her age and is getting rid of stuff. I cant believe she was going to toss them. She said the neighbor, who we don't like, said he would " despose" of them for her. Ya right!

That was nice of your aunt. I hope you checked out the outher boxes. I think they were full of paper money.

This never happens to me!
Congrats!

The kind woman gave you her fortune. I hope you repay her 3 times over now.

Great score, and YOU WILL send her a Christmas card, right?
Carl

I was just reading the replies to your post and wondering "what could you possibly get this sweet woman for such a wonderful gift?" And then I thought of my 82 year old mother and how she has been doing the same thing with her belongings and my dad's stuff who passed in 2010. All she really wants is for everyone to visit her more so I think I'll take her out for lunch tomorrow and spend the day with her. Your aunt had to know the value of that coin collection 'cause you know your uncle talked about it with her. I hope you make that 3 hour drive as often as you can before she goes. Enjoy your beautiful new coin collection for a long time to come.

Anyway, amazing find/gift littlebill! It's like a coin shop suddenly being yours! Have fun sorting them out.

Bill, Haven't seen a post in awhile from you, but, this one is SO COOOOL man! JACKPOT! Wish I had an Aunt so generous!!! God Bless Chris

Savant356- I agree. We go over there a lot!. That's all she wants. She was very savy with her money, graduating from Johns Hopkins in the '40's and is in no need of money. She just wants family around her. She is still very active and drives, ugh. But is quite competent. She has no children, BUT there are plenty of vultures around her. It seems people only come over to get something. My wife and I, and her mother, all enjoy this woman's company, but these other people, like the neighbor, just want stuff. Even the pastor across the street asks her for items everytime he comes over. It's sick.

I asked her last evening about the coins and told her what they were. She said she had no need for them, or the value, and wanted someone who would enjoy them to have them. The only thing my wife and I have ever asked her for was for an old Westinghouse rotissery (spelling) oven from the '40's. We wanted it for a conversation piece. I think thats why she gave me the coins, because we spend time with her not wanted money or items. The funny thing is, is that she is "on" to the other people in her life. She knows darn well what they are up to. It's nice to talk to her. She is a treasure of knowledge and loves to talk about her early days. Which fasinates me.

Worldtalker- Ya, my truck broke down last fall and I had to sell my MD's to pay the repair bill. So I lost a little interest in hunting. But I bought a Garrett Ace350 last week and am back in it! Apparently I scored yesterday without the need of the MD, lol.

Historyhound- The Morgans were bought in 1972. Each box has the receipt, card and the lid of the box has a message from nixon on it.

Oh, her husdand died in 1985, I think, and this box was unopened since he was last in it. I had to put all the stuff in a better box to get it home.
