Re: got a guess on this bullet's age???

The profile is very similiar to a .41 short rimfire as used in derringers. The 41 short rimfire was introduced in 1862.My Grampa carried one when I was a child.

Bullet dia .should be about .405.

I think it's a pistol bullet and it goes in a case 'cause it has a crimping groove (as opposed to a black powder muzzle loader bullet). I'd say it's at least from the mid 30's or older. I haven't seen a bullet of that profile for a long time. Monty

Re: got a guess on this bullet's age???

The crimping groove is the last one toward the nose with uneven lines in it. The others are lubricating grooves that would contain some type of lube and would be inside the case when loaded. Inside the case lubricating bullets was a big deal when they were invented. You could carry a pocket full of ammo without getting the grease all over you. About the only remaining outside the case lubed bullets in use today is the .22 long rifle and it's sister cartridges. Really old cartridges used a mixture of graphite, sperm oil and ear wax....no, no, I mean beeswax! I found the old timey formula for bullet lube in a really old reloading manual from the early 30s I picked up at a swap meet. The only problem, it caused black powder to smoke even more and the new smokeless powder smoked some when it was used. When I throw in bits of trivia like this my wife calls me "Cliff Claven". :( Monty

Yes, the newer stuff is waxy instead of sticky like an older product say, Aalox for instance, one of the old standbys. Monty
