Got a bunch of coins today!

Well today my buddy called me and was in need of some money. He said he was willing to sell some coins. So this is what I got today. I'm not to sure of all the values but I think I got a good deal. I paid $42 for everything.

1819 large cent - in good shape w/ details but dark in color

1848 large cent - in decent shape

1857 flying eagle cent - slight wear on front but good details on obverse, readable date

1868 nickel - decent shape

1929 buffalo

5 wheaties

1966 Canadian dime - silver!

1956 British six pence

3x (Proof?) British 5 pounds - all 3 dated 2000 w/ pamphlet celebrating the coin.

Last but not least a Mexican 8 reale libertad - I'm not to sure on the date but I think it says 1834. I tried doing a little research on it but all the ones I've seen have different initials and what not, kind of confusing. But I know it has .76 a Troy oz of silver!

Did I do good for paying $42? Any info on the libertad would be great!

If you want further assistance with ID-ing your 8R coin, type out and post what letters and numbers that you can see. A pic of the 'radiant Liberty cap' (reverse side) of the coin might also be helpful. The legend may read something like: "8R (initials), (date), (initials) then 10 Ds 20 Gs". The fineness of silver was measured in the medieval system of dineros and granos. 12 dineros was pure silver. Each dinero was divided into 24 granos. Most silver coin legends read 10 Ds. 20Gs or .902777 fine.

Probably a good deal, for value you would need to know the real grade of the coins. The flying eagle cent and the 1848 large cent are the only ones I can see well, they are in very low grade but still would have some value. The 1819 looks like it might be a little better, but hard to tell from the pictures.

Here are some better pictures of the 8R. From what I can read it says "*8R . Z (mini "s") 18(unknown number looks to be a 3/8/9 due to the top of the number having a curve)4. Than there is a hole after that it reads "Z. 10D. (mini s) 20G (mini s). I tried looking this coin up but have not found a coin with matching letters/numbers.

I'd call it an 1894 8R Guadalajara mint ("G" after the "8R") 'NS' designer (initials above the "G") Assayer JS; 2M+ mintage.

The 1956 British 6 pence is worth about $1. The 5 pound proofs are worth $20 each.

Thanks Don! Your info was very helpful. Foreign coins intimidate me because I know so little about them. The proof coins i'm not to interested in so i'll probably sell them
