That exact shape of item has been posted here in the What-Is-It forum previously, a year or two ago. If I recall correctly, it was identified as a Revolutionary War or War-of-1812 era bayonet scabbard frog's "clasp," broken off from the scabbard-throat's main body. But my elderly brain's memory may be incorrect. Perhaps somebody here can find that old discussion-thread.

While doing research on another kind of relic today, I stumbled across the exact object you found -- and thus now can definitely identify it for you. It is the belt-attachment prong from the scabbard throat of a US Model-1840 NCO (Non-Commissioned Officer) sword and same-model of Musician's swords. See the closeup of the scabbard-throat at the bottom of the photo below. The prong on the scabbard-throat fit into the appropriate type of sword-belt's leather "frog."

Mark, my profile shows I live in the Richmond VA vicinity. I had a relic sales-table at the Fredericksburg civil war show for over 25 years. It's a great show, but at my age it's too risky to drive that far. I sure do miss seeing my friends there. If you bump into Dennis Cox or any of the other Fredericksburg oldtimers (like Danny Elkins, Nick Harris, Dan Poppen, etc), tell them "The Cannonball Guy" says hello. They'll know who you mean, because they are the guys who gave me that nickname, back in the 1980s when I lived in Fredericksburg.

Nope... I sold the best stuff in my collection to pay off the mortgage on my house. Turned out to have been a wise decision to do so, because shortly afterward my wife got laid off and couldn't find another job for 22 months. We would've lost the house.
