Went to a bank today and the teller told me he had some guy bring in 3 boxes of pennies that were old. I asked due to the large quantity whether they were dumped by someone (I was sceptical whether they were all zincolns). He told me that they were brought in by a guy that bought a house and found 3 boxes of pennies by the water heater. The boxes were old alright and the rolls too. Two of the boxes had rolls that were crimp wrapped and old. One of the boxes was date stamped Sept 23, 1979! I've been busy of late and will travel out of town next week so I don't have much time to CRH this week. I opened one roll and yep, they were all pre-1979 and had a corroded 1934 wheat in that roll. It would be interesting to see how these boxes turn out. This would answer a question how CRHing would be in 1979 for pennies! Will post results later this week. Sorry got other stuff to do first.

I told the teller guy that the 3 boxes were $40 in profit due to all copper. He told me that he probably would've bought them. I probably shouldn't mention the $40 in profit so now he'll probably keep all copper pennies boxes but I am interested in what these boxes can bring and what types and how many wheats could be inside. I thought about just putting them up for sale on Feebay as sealed rolls from 1979 but I thought it would be better to just go through them. Believe me the boxes and rolls definitely do look old.

SFBay,

Take pictures if you can of the rolls and let us know what you find. I'd be interested to see what the rolls even look like!

Fantastic! Keep us posted on what you find. I'd LOVE to have a find like that. :icon_thumleft:

I would say that you have around 50 wheats in each box. I came across two boxes like that in 2008, except they were packed in 2008. The whole box were pre-80 cents except a few 08 cents.

Here's the pics.. my dilemma is that I don't know if I should open the tightly rolled boxes. I opened some in the box with loose wrapped ones. Other than the corroded 1934 wheat I found in the first roll, the last 5 rolls I opened were just coppers from mostly 70's & 60's. Perhaps a CRHer had gone through this box. I know that for sure the tightly wrapped ones are not messed with. Two boxes say Bank of Stockton & one says Union Bank. Very Cool looking. Very 70's-ish.

Open the f&^k outta them!!!!

Should be some good wheatie dates in there. Heck, you might even find some IHs.

I would open it, I know pennies were heavily CRH'ed in the 60's and 70's even into nthe early 80's. My father even knows friends who used to do that for fun in their spair time, they have huge jars of wheats... but not a coin collector anymore.Give it a try, you have nothing to lose, only to gain!

You know what you have to do. You are a hunter. Open the rolls and let the hunt begin. I would separate the BU copper from the others. Also, you have an excellent chance at finding a 1969-S DD. Good luck and keep updating this thread with more pics of your progress. I envy you. It looks like fun.

Knowledge is power.

Interesting how there are no (obvious) wheat enders in any of those boxes.

Nice find and good luck.

10 years ago, I would never have thought that I would end up being a cancer patient. Open the dang rolls and see what you have now. You may not be here in 10 years. (not trying to be negative, but my perspectives have changed)

I think you might be a little disappointed if you're expecting hundreds of wheaties and a few indians. While I didn't CRH back in the 1970's, my entire family has always saved all of their pocket change, and I've been searching that pocket change since the early 1970's. I have never personally seen a single indian in circulation, and the ratio of wheaties to memorials hasn't changed all that much in the 35+ years that I've been searching. Of course the ratio has went down with all of the hundreds and hundreds of millions of memorials minted since then, but wheaties were not overly abundant in circulation even back in the '70s. At least not from my experience. Just recently my mother found a stash of cents that she knew she had put somewhere, but was unable to find. There was about $100 worth. The newest coins in the lot were shiny 1982's, so I know the entire stash was taken from circulation from 1982 and before. There were only 6 wheaties in that stash. I must add to that though that it is entirely possible that I had searched a portion of that stash back in the '70s or 'early '80s.

With that said, it was a no-brainer buy with the guaranteed 100% copper. I'd probably have to open them. But, before I did, I would be very tempted to put one on eBay just as a test with something like at least a $100 opening bid just to see what would happen. It might not receive a single bid. It might sell for an absolutely ridiculous amount.

Ditto that. Never discount the utter stupidity of the masses.

Cancer has a way of changing perspectives, I can certainly relate. Mine was operable, but there are no other options if it turns out later that the surgery failed. Chemo or radiation were useless for the type I had.

Savor each day, as none of us are guaranteed a tomorrow. Try to do what you enjoy, like CRH'ing.
