I have been looking for 19th century uniform buttons for a couple of years but just couldn't find them. And then there was yesterday!!!

Got permission to hunt a field just north of Guyton, GA. Sherman's army assembled about 6 miles north for his final assault of Savannah, GA. About 15,000 troops marched through Guyton over a 10 day period. Most of the area is closed to MDing by the State but there are still a few farm fields by the RR tracks that can be hunted. This field has probably been hunted by hundreds of people over the years. Didn't think there would be much there but I had no other place to go. Kinda glad I went.

This is NOT an ad for the e-Trac by holy crap. 3 hours in the field and I pulled 4 South Carolina Palmetto buttons (may be CW or may be 1870 Militia) and a Standing Liberty Quarter all at about 8-10". Now I'm all for depth and sensitivity but I dug about 40 targets in the field and only the aluminum slaw was 4" or less. This machine may kill me.

It may kill you,but thats a good way to go.I think the buttons are worth a bit of money ::)

Re: Goood e-Trac, Goood e-Trac

That's a great day!

Depth like that is par for the course on the high-end Minelabs.

Now you can fix your avatar! :D

Re: Goood e-Trac, Goood e-Trac

Nice buttons for sure.

The e-trac looks like a great unit.

Re: Goood e-Trac, Goood e-Trac

I here ya Bio. E-trac depth and sensitivity is amazing. What I hate is having to dig a "neat" 8-10-12" hole in somebodies yard! Sheesh, maybe I should just get rid of mine so I won't have to do that.............well, second thought, nah.

Excellent finds, BTW!

Re: Goood e-Trac, Goood e-Trac

I feel your pain, especially when the landowner is watching you dig 30 holes in their yard.

Great button cache Daryl! Love seeing Horstmann & Co. on the back of any button I dig! Jim

Jim,

Help me out a little on the backmark. I can't find any SC Palmetto buttons with that backmark. The date they used that backmark is good but did they just not make many SC Palmetto buttons?

Thanks,

Daryl

Here's what I have--from Tice:

"SC262 (Albert's SC 15B):

South Carolina Militia; convex, two-piece.

The device is similar to that of SC260, but six fronds lie at each side of two central leafs on a lined field. Initials "SC" are present at the side of a palmetto tree. Some of these common buttons probably postdate the Civil War, 23 mm."

Scovill manufactured these during the 1850s and 1860s.

Best Wishes,

Buckles

Yes, but this is a different backmark!  And that makes all the difference.  If these were Confederate "local" buttons, then they would be worth their weight in Gold--Literally!

BUT...

I'm going to do some searching now, and see if I can find an example for sale with the same backmark as the ones you dug...

Hopefully they tossed out the Trousers with the Coat.

Can you see any traces of gilding on these buttons?

Thanks Buckle Boy,

I've looked and can't find any. The chart I posted above was the only date range I could find and it put the backmark in the CW period. That's all I got.
