Google goes Underwater

Anyone care to take a stab at this one in the Bahamas. Its 650' long by 220' wide and doesn't look to be a cloud shadow or spot on the lense.

regecy,

Its the scuttled Exxon Valdez.

Robert, where is that picture from? Is that through a paid satellite service or just google earth?

Sabre, its from Google Earth.

The image is in the bahamas and the GPS coordinates are at the bottom.

I just thought the beam was awfully wide, given the length was only 650'.

May sound crazy but I've seen a shoal of tuna nearly twice that size that literally looked like a giant shadow approaching the boat. Then they hit our chum line and went into a frenzy. Cool find man.

That is cool, i've just got the new Google Ocean 5.0, but that picture is really clear! Does anybody know where Limo Bob got his pictures? I believe there are satellites out there that can see even better than Google.
Using google i can see pretty well alonf the coastlines but havn't had success out into the oceans.

Google, MSN, and others do not go out too far past the coastline since there is not a whole lot out there to see, other than water. The new Google 5.0 just has bottom contours, and some other features related to the ocean, but no images in high detail.

You can download some pretty interesting images from different satelites on the USGS web site. It is a little harder to sort through what you are looking for, but certainly worth the time if you have a specific target or area in mind.

As for LimoBobs images, I am not sure where he got them or what type of images they are! Maybe LimoBob will share what he finds.

Good Luck,

Robert

You know, that image looks just like one of those huge Chinese ships from 1421... 8)

Robert,

I have a friend sailing in the Bahamas, so I send him the coords and asked him to check out your spot if he was in the area. This is the reply I just received.

I don't remember what I sent you as far as info reference the anomoly. It was very prominent and visible from the deck. I would have liked to explore, but we were under sail, trying to make Bimini before dark and the Skipper was afraid to sail across it as there was no way to know its depth and what obstacles it contained. And its no place to get in trouble, rather isolated. There is no land in sight. It looks like grass or coral but located like it is in a vast area of sand, it could be the scattered remains of a wreck that provided the catalyst that caused the grass or coral to grow in that location. I gotta say, as prominent as it is, it is well off, as in out of sight, of all routes crossing the banks and it would be very unusual for a boat to come close enough to see it. That might not make sense, but you need to know that there is no fishing on the banks because there are no fish, cause there is no grass or anything to sustain them. It's kinda like an aquatic desert. Very beautiful, but very barren of life.

Guy in Back,

Wow, thats amazing. Like he said, it is very prominent and visible. Did he mention the depth of the water nearby? It looks pretty shallow.

But like he said, there is really nothing around it, no other grass or coral in the area to easily explain it off as a natural formation. Definitely worth checking out someday!

Thanks,

Robert

The bank in the area is 10-20' deep if I recall. Will have to look at a chart to be sure.

The next time I go past that way I'll make it a point to go below and make some bubbles. Something has caused the anomaly.
