Google Earth useful tool for MD'ers/TH'ers

Don't know if someone has posted this idea but here you guys go anyhow.

I've been using Google Earth to scope out locations and I find it useful for documenting locations and the findings at these locations. You can add Placemarks to the utility with a description. I use a ranking system 1 through 10 at the end of the name of the location .

Here is a link for downloading...

Also there is a pic below you can click on to show what I'm talking about.

Yep, I use it too. There's grassy areas near historic sites that I would never know about without using Google Earth. And I also use it to scope out and mark new hunting sites like hidden neighborhood parks, etc. It sure beats driving around looking for sites with gas prices the way they are.

Hi Guys,
Am new to Metal Detecting,,, in fact only got a very cheap detector.... Am living in South Africa with no clubs in sight. Have found this web site to be of great help. Using Google World is brilliant. I tried to get to my town but unfortunately it is not clear. Is there any other program that does the same thing as Google Earth?

God bless
Peter

Yep I use Google earth also,,, have you all seen some of the detail in and around Chicago, totally awesome. I wish my area had that much detail.
I'm sure with time they will get it all updated...

Another site I have used is Tarra Server, not sure if the detail would be any better for you, or not...

Unless you can afford the upgrade from the basic free service......I dont see how Google Earth would be of much help. It doesnt allow you to get close enough to see details.

One service that I have found good results with is my countys GIS site. It allows you to look up someones property, tells you contact info, and if the house is occupied....when it was built. The site has overlays that allows you to use aerial photos, shows streams, property lines, etc. If the house isnt occupied....it doesnt tell when it was built but most of the old houses around here were built in the same style and about the same time.

This is a pic from the site of a local school that is not used anymore....trying to get permission to hunt it. The detail of this site lets you get close enough to be able to search for old road beds....which I think I have found one. See if you can spot it in the second pic.
