I'm not very familar with the Google Earth system as far as the download goes. I know it's a very useful tool in searching out spots to hunt, but I do want to get a little input as to the safety of the download. I'm on my second computer. The last one "ate" 4 hardrives before it crashed and I'm a little nervous about downloading anything.
Is the standard (free) version of Google Earth at the Google Earth site safe enough to download?
Is there any cost involved with this version?
There are 3 site's locally that this would be a great tool to look over the area's prior to venturing out in the field. These site's have a solid past that would pay out well with what I know of them so I am naturaly a little eager to "get my hunt on". Could anyone who uses this version of G.E be able to give me a little advice?
My great thanks.

Certainly no expert myself, but I've used the free version of Google Earth with no problems. I have a High Speed DSL connection so it loads pretty quickly. The cities on GE are fairly easy to get good detail. The countryside and deserts are another story. So depending on what area you want to view you may get good results or lousy results. I say give it a try...it won't hurt. It's FUN!!!! You can view your own home and see things you never knew before...like how much of that tree in the backyard actually hangs over your roof. LOL Hey, if there was a problem with GE, millions of people would not use it everyday. Right?

I agree with TT, no problems except rural areas are not very clear or accurate and that is somewhat of a hinderance when searching for signs or scars from old land use. Monty

Played with GE a lil bit but i found mapquest alot easier. Type in a loc, once the map page opens look on the top right of the map screen and they have aerial view u can zoom in real nice and pan or search in the generial area very easy. Plus they have most the country maps in aerial view also. I looked up and down the entire east coast from Del. to Fla. in aerial views found alot of interesting spots to check out.

A map opens in street view but u can click the tab for aerial or vice versa. Its on the top right of the map that opens.

It's safe. BTW if a computer is eating hard drives one should look into upgrading to a better power supply. That is the number one killer of hard drives.

Coincidentally, I just downloaded Google Earth lastnight.. no problems and it was a snap. Is you computer an older Dell? My father was having all sorts of bad luck with harddrives and his older Dell. He eventually purchased a decent harddrive (not a warranty replacement) and that solved his problems.

One thing about Google Earth, the better graphics memory you have, the faster and clearer it is. I have a graphics card on my computer and its fine. I wouldnt suggest it for computers more than 5 yrs old because it takes up a lot of memory.

I went to www.mapcard.com when google earth was giving me problems. There is a $20-$30/yr cost, but I think it is great. Instantly switch from topo map to aerial photo, scale and print, add pushpins/polygons for gridding, etc. You might check it out.

check out the old photos section here on the main page, there's a free download there for terraclient. It gives you sat. image with topo overlay. works great

You'll love it. I used it just this morning to pinpoint an historic church site. Guess where I'm heading tomorrow.

treasure tales,
i just downloaded it today, and put my address in, and i zoomed in and found my road i live on and the surronding area, but as far as zooming in" to see the tree behind your house",, for me it wont go in that close, well it does but then everything is just a blur, i can zoom in close enough to make out main roads, but anything like logging trails or rural driveways, i cant get in close enough and be clear, am i doing something wrong? i downloaded the free version, if it makes a difference
thanks

It's safe and easy to use from my standpoint. I have Bellsouth DSL which ain't real fast and it does the trick on mine. It doesn't cost anything, and I've found everything I've looked for on it so far. When I GE'd the coordinates of a geocache, it pinpointed it to the point I didn't need the handheld gpsr and walked right to it. You can see my house on it reall well, it's a trip! You can count the boxwoods going down either side of my walkway in the front of my house.

dobie, GoogleEarth has good, clear detail for some parts of the country--while some parts aren't as clear and detailed. I don't know why, but maybe it depends on population densities or something. If you are having problems seeing the detail on your house, try going to another city in another state and see if you have the same trouble. It may be limitations in your computer/software or it may be GE, hard to say. You'll have to do a little experimentation to determine which is causing the limitations in clarity.
