This is from the link below...

"In 1844, Goodyear - yes, the people who make your tires! - and Hancock began to produce condoms out of vulcanized rubber. Vulcanization is a process that treats crude rubber with sulfur and subjects it to intense heat, which turns it into a strong elastic material.?

Mr. Goodyear might have given the condom a new nickname that is still in use today ("rubber"), but his condoms were a lot different than the ones we're used to now. Men were instructed to wash their condoms before and after sex, and to reuse them again and again until they cracked or broke, which we now know is a definite no-no."

Well, my answer's not quite as colorful as Dig's (as amplified by Jim's follow-up)— and it doesn't push the date back much farther than Gypsy's fine post. Nevertheless, here goes...

Goodyear introduced the LifeGuard Safety Tube in 1934. This design was the world's first "safety tire," featuring a tube inside a tire to improve stability so that, in the event of a puncture, the driver could safely steer the car off the road.

Wow, yours is way better shape than my 3 merry widows, a couple weeks back, (that did not sell on ebay) from the same era, very cool find, from the condition yours likley has a better chance than mine.

Hmmmm, wash and wear condoms? Or Lifesaver tires? I thought rubbers were what you wore over your shoes if it rained.? I'm confused, not that that's anything new! Tires that come with a warning, "For the prevention of disease only"? Condoms with a road hazard guarantee? Rubbers to wear in the locker room shower to prevent athletes foot? By the way I just read that scientists have discovered that the common aspirin is a sure fire method of birth control for teens. The young lady presses it firmly between her knees! Seriously,. I would guess that it was an ad gimmick for tires. Monty
