never heard of goodwill bins. there is a GW less than a mile from my place. went in once and they just had overpriced k-rap and would not haggle on scrap copper/brass.

A few months back there were some folks holding signs picketing in front of my local GW. I stopped to talk to these folks to find out what the problem was. They were all blind and were a part of a local union/organization for the blind. Apparently there is a law that allows GW to hire workers with disabilities but pay them less than minimum wage. They were trying to raise awareness of this and hopefully either get people to lobby to have the law changed or to get GW to agree to pay ALL of their workers at least minimum wage.

I have talked to some of the folks that work there before too. I met one guy who was really cool and he was basically part of a half-way program to get back on his feet.

Yeah I use to shop them. I found some good items there last yr but now it is like shopping the dump. JMO on that. I dont know if they changed managers or what but the stuff went from good to terrible. Unless you buy clothes or furniture the rest is bad news. The pics arent even nothing but prints now. You use to be able to pick up a nice painting once in a while for under 20 but now they want 20 for a print. And I am talking about GW

Im talking about the outlet goodwills, they are strictly bins, kinda cool...

Honestly this is what bugs me about liberals/unions. Lets say these guys do get a law passed that forces goodwill to pay everyone minimum wage. Why would anyone hire a disabled or blind person at minimum wage when they can hire a full able bodied person for the same money? All they would do is hurt the disabled people with the jobs. They would all get fired and replaced. Well they would all get fired and maybe 50% replaced. Sorry went off on a tangent, I don't mean to hijack a thread but uhhhhh the road to hell is paved with good intentions.

...Never heard of outlet goodwill's........I do know if i go down in Austintown Ohio ahd on rt 224 in Canfield ohio the Goodwills there are spotless floors shine shelfs nice and clean and stacked neat.......... Thanks for posting that list. Just found out there is one on my way into work. Drive by everyday and had no idea it was there. Going to check it out tomorrow. :icon_thumright:

I've heard about these GW outlet stores just haven't been to the one in my area yet. It's a little far unless i'm already in that area. One day i'll check it out. Thanks for the list.

We visit the outlets on occasion.

I find that it is hit and miss. I've some pretty good scores.

My wife bought a complete aluminum Christmas tree from the 1950's for $8. We brought it home and listed it, and it sold for $159 in about 15 minutes. I bought a Dave Ramsey DVD teaching kit for $3, and flipped it for $150 the next day.

I have found that the picking there is not nearly as good as it once was. Since we flea market too, even if I don't find ebayable junk, we can always find enough junk for our booths to pay for our gas.

There is one by me. Not bins though. I dropped off a bag of clothes and went in to look. I found a pretty bowl and mount for 3.95. Once home I noticed more detail to it and turned out to be an 18th century famille vert bowl in ormolu mount. Which I was able to sell at a local auction house for $1600!!! Not a bad buy. So I definitely scored well there.

Forgot to add, when I got the check from the auction, I donated $500 of it back to the store I bought it in, cause you know...karma! Lol

Don't let Fox News blind you so badly that you can't see that these are just Americans trying to earn a living. But if you are happy trying to survive earning less than minimum wage working a job that is less than glamourous, be my guest.
Hey, maybe GW can move it's operations overseas. Then they won't have to worry about who they hire or how much they pay them.

First things first, minimum wage laws hurt poor people. The vast majority of minimum wage workers are teenagers just starting out in the job market with no experience or skills. These jobs let them get both. However even those minimum wage jobs get more scarce because business owners hire less people. You are not supposed to start and raise a family on a minimum wage job, its purpose is to get young people an opportunity to gather experience and skills for their next better paying job. Less jobs, less opportunity for experience.

If you fall into that other category of not being a teenager working a minimum wage job, well do you think a company is going to pay you more than what you are worth? They would quickly go out of business.

If the work you do is losing a company money, they have an easy decision to keep you employed or fire you.

But you are correct, when our labor becomes overpriced, companies move to where they can make more profits. Again minimum wage is hurting the poor because now instead of a low paying job they have no job.

Obviously welfare plays a part too, since why work a minimum wage job if welfare pays better? Or even a less than minimum wage job?

There are many money factors to this discussion about jobs but that is the basics.

And back to my original thought, do you at least understand the point I am trying to make about the picketers? If they succeed they will cost those people their jobs. So how does that help them?

And one final thought, corporations don't pay taxes. Any tax increase levied on a corporation is negated by lower worker wages and or higher consumer prices. So lets say I am wrong and they do not fire all their workers, they will just raise prices on all their goods. So they are not forcing them (GW in this case) to reduce their bottom line.

Ok, I get it, you are a fiscal conservative - which is fine.

All I want people to consider is this: Do we really want our businesses to make a buck on the backs of our fellow hard working Americans, especially those with disabilities? There are plenty of examples of US companies who manage to walk a fine line between treating their workers fairly and still being able to turn a profit. Isn't that the American dream? Or is it to succumb to the GREED that has corrupted us and turn our backs on our own people just so a few can make a whole lot more?
