Got out this past Sunday to detect an old farmstead in central Va.. Thought we were going to get skunked until we tried an adjoining corn field. This area saw a fair amount of cavalry action during TWBTS. Found a spent Spencer cartridge, an 1852 silver 3 cent piece (sorry no pic right now) and what I believe to be a half of a cannonball separated along its mold line. I've attached pics so anybody who knows anything about these, please weigh in. It's about 3.5 in in diameter and very heavy for its size. It has a small cavity in the middle about the size of a marble with a small channel that would have led to the outside of the ball. If its not a cannonball, the only other thing I could think of would be a gate weight altho the find location would make that a bit strange. Thoughts?
