Good week - lots of small denomination key dates!

Had a very cool week hunting. Didn't find much volume wise but still found lots of goodies including key dates

2 boxes of halves - found 4 40%ers, nothing special but halves have been dead for me since Christmas so it was nice to something in the box.

1 bag dimes ($1K) - Found 5 Rosie's which is pretty average, but pulled a '49-S and '52-S which both filled holes in the book for me. I only need 8 more Rosie's to complete it. Funny enough I've found every Rosie under 15M mintage but still need 1954P and 1961P both which have mintages at or above 100M. Right now I'm missing '47-S, '48-D, '50-D, '51-S, '54, '54-S, '55-S & '61.

1 bag nickels ($200) - Still can't find the '43-D to complete the Jefferson book but I did find our 2nd '39-D (found the first one in November). Also found 2 Buffalo's (1936 & UD) and an '88-S Proof. I also find it weird that Proof Jefferson's and relatively easy to find but finding a proof penny is nearly impossible.

1 bag pennies ($50) - Found 19 wheaties which is a really good bag for me. Also had 11 dimes in it which is always better than finding 11 pennies in your dime bag. Nothing exciting date wise but good to see a handful come out. Pennies it my area are really tough due to some volume hunters. I haven't pulled an IHP since forever.... Maybe this week.

Misc - I also found a 1980-S Proof SBA in my change from a vending machine. First one for me as I don't hunt the small dollars.

Overall very pleased with my progress towards the Rosie collection. Also nice to have pulled 2 1939-D's and a 1950-D Jefferson since November and having pulled none of either in the 5-6 years before that.

Wow - a 1950D nickel. The chance of finding that coin in circulation is minuscule because I believe that its low mintage was known early on and those in the know squirreled away roll upon roll. I recall it being a $50 coin in the sixties because it was the key to the series -- it's a lot less now.

Blue - yeah, the ‘50-D is a lot cheaper to buy today than several decades ago. It is still very hard to find. Most people who search nickels find either the ‘50-D, ‘39-D or ‘43-D as their last open spot in the book.

Although I haven't searched in about five years, I searched pretty heavily for the 5 years before that.

My tough two were always the 1938-S and 1950-D.

I did eventually find 3 of the 1938-S and 2 of the 1950-D.

By comparison, the only other pre-1960 Jefferson's I didn't find at least a full roll of 40 coins of were (# found):
1939-D (6)
1943-D (13)
1939-S (19)
1944-S (26)
1938-D (27)
1942-S (37)

And although not exactly the same, just to put the rarity in perspective, during that same time, I also found almost a full roll of 1936 Buffalo nickels (35) and the buffalo nickels were scattered across all searches and not all in one box/bag.


The reason proof nickels are easier to find than proof pennies is that they minted a lot more pennies than they did nickels overall, but the same number of proof coins for both, so proof nickels make up a higher percentage of all nickels than proof pennies do. Take 2016 for example, per the US Mint, they minted 9.1184 billion pennies and 1.54656 billion nickels, but just as many proofs of both. All other things being equal, 2016 proof pennies should be approximately 6 times harder to find than 2016 proof nickels.

I am not sure if the numbers are the same for other years and whether they would be higher or lower, but I am guessing they would be at least similar.
