Sure, go ahead and laugh at the little guy...

You'll whistle a different tune when it turns out to be a 24K iridium power key that unlocks the secrets of Atlantis!

(And by the way, don't surprised if there's a giant beanstalk in your backyard when you wake up tomorrow morning.)

Omigosh— first all this noggin knockin', and now you've taken away his cowboy hat!

If only I could remember the number for 911...

Be the benevolent grampa and give the kid a buck or two and a pat on the head.

Pump him up, not tear him down!

However, since this may lead to other trades, tell him that you must OK all future trades.

Grandson made a trade in school yesterday.

A Hot Wheels for this pictured thingy. I have no clue as to what it is but he thinks is silver and that he is now rich.

Do I praise him? Or do I swat him across the nogin?

It weighs about 2 ounces and it's chromed.

Why let the story end there? In the news recently was a story about one Kyle MacDonald, who over the course of a year started with a red paper clip and eventually traded up to a house. Here's the site if you want to see the progressive trades from red paperclip to house:

Value is in the eye of the beholder. Use this as an opportunity to teach your grandson the skill of horse trading, and who knows where it will end up. I'm guessing that your grandson traded for this item because it was shiny and heavy. That means someone else's grandson will probably think the same thing, and be willing to trade a toy or object they are tired of for this. An adult artist might be willing to trade something for this because he can use it in a piece of art. There's also a good chance that your grandson can trade it for a strange metal wheel numbered from 1 to 15...

Just deprive him of bow tie privileges. That will teach him!

It looks like a design emblem that was seated into or had attached to something... but which came out/off or was pryed off of it.

It may have been a part of a pen from a pen set. I doubt if it is silver. It if were, it would probably be marked as such with either 'SS' or a number such as '725' (some Mexican silver) or '925'. It appears to be made of the same kind of metal that is used to make zippers for clothes such as jackets.

But do not discourage him from making trades and deals. Just make sure that he know more about what he is doing. Why don't you help him by showing him markings that help to identify whether or not something is made of one metal or another? This could be a great opportunity for you to bond and become even better buddies! Isn't that a great way of looking at this? Take care and best wishes,
