I'm getting much better at pinpointing with my 9" coil, but sometimes I still can't find the dang thing! I hate to dig more than about 6-7 inches unless I can make a BIG hole, like in the woods or open field.

What's the solution? Keep digging?

I'm thinking of buying a pinpointer to aid in recovery- but it'll take lots of recovered clad to pay for itself!

Thanks for any advise!

A good pinpointer like the Garrett Propointer is your solution. Quicker recoveries, smaller holes, less frustration and fewer lost finds. I never land hunt without it.

Bout how far from the tip is the garrett good for?

A good inch and a half, depends on the objects size, i'm glad I bought one a month ago they help recovery a lot!!

A pinpointer can help some mysteries. Really saves time. Not pushing you, unless its tiny you can find it eventually.
Not sure what's going on with your example.
One place i hunt the older stuff is around 7 to 9 inches on a firm base.
Not using it alot but cut a notch out of the edge of a cheap frisbee, dirt goes on it from below plug.
Usually piling dirt 2 sides of hole and raking last crumbs with gloved hands leaves a pretty clean spot.
Seldom dig more than 10 inches,it would be a big target for my unit to find deeper usually.
So i guess i would dig deeper with occasional detector pinpointing.
Keep what's dug off hole side enough not to cause a hit if target is missed and in it. Good luck.

garrets are all Hype cen-teck will do the same thing for a lot cheaper and you can a just it to pick up at a great distance...save your money...harbor freight...

good question Bigchief. i have the same problem and i am sure all diggers have had at 1 point or another . i have been swinging my md for less than a year with my 12 yr old son , and we find the same problem , get a strong signal at 5 inchs ,, dig down 7 inches and nothing , but since the MD head will not fit down in the whole , it still sits at ground level and tells me its there at 5 inches....my son and i have done this many times and gave up thinking it was maybe something bigger down deeper fooling the MD ?
we got a sweet deal on the whites spectrum but honestly can not afford to spend another 100-200 dollars on a pinpointer at this time.. maybe if we found a couple old coins to make it easier to convince the Bank ,,A,K,A my wife to spot 2 poor diggers a loan we may do it at a later date .

Yea, It's hard to beat the $18 price on a Harbor Freight pinpointer. It picks up at the same distance as a Garret. Frank

You have to cut the sensitivy down! Here's another point, your detector target and dept are calibrated for coin size targets. Here's an example of how this will through you off. I got a dept reading of 3" on this target, and I am not one to give up on an indication. I finally hit the target at 10". Here it is! ......Frankax300.jpg

Sometimes a really "rusted through" iron or steel target will give a good (false) signal at first, then when you disturb it it will vanish.
