Hi All,
I went back to the farm where I found the Virginia button today and I gave the landowner the frame with the button. He was very happy, and I could tell it meant a lot to him. He spent a while with my father in law and me showing us different areas of his property that might have some leads. We hoofed it all the way to the back of this field to find some old foundations, and when we got there, the ground was like concrete and it was very rocky, so after an hour, we retreated back to the house where the soil was a little more manageable.
I fairly quickly popped out a small buckle, but then dug trash for the next hour. Just when I was getting really frustrated, circling a part of the yard I have hunted many many times, I dug a ghostly signal and at about 7 inches, my first silver thimble popped out! My wife is a quilter and a thimble collector, so I was very excited about this.
A little later, right be the gate on the way to the car, I got by far my best find of the day, my first reale!
It is an 1809 holed 1 reale of king Ferdinand VII with a Mexico City mintmark. It was on edge about five inches down, but it sang out like a champ on the DFX.
Very excited!
