How's this for thinking outside the box?

Went to one of two coin clubs that I belong to last night. They have an auction every month. This one had little promise of anything worth bidding on and most coins get scooped up for a price that leaves little to no meat on the bone.

Well, a brand new shrink wrapped coin album came up for bid at $10. To my surprise, crickets in the room!

I knew what it was so I stuck up my hand and ended up winning it for the $10 opening bid.

It is a Dansco 7070 Type Set album. They are discontinued and hard to find. A sealed new book should fetch around $100 on ebay (if I don't keep it for myself).

I love auctions.

Sometimes, before an auction, I think, "I'm going to be able to buy anything that I want. No one will show up, and no one will know what some of this stuff is worth."

And then sometimes, I have to convince my self to go to a particular auction. "That stuff will go sky high. Every car guy east of the Mississippi River will be there, and will run those parts through the roof. I won't be able to touch a thing."

Generally speaking, I am generally wrong when I have those preconceived thoughts and notions. Often, what happens at the auction is exactly the opposite of what I had been thinking. The bottom line is that you never know until you get there, and you never know what deal might pop up out of the blue.

A few weeks ago, I went to an estate auction. Despite the heavy advertisement and a long list of high quality woodworking tools, no one showed up for the sale. I bought a $600+ table saw for a mere $65, and flipped it, albeit too cheap, for $200 about a week later.

You are right, you just never know what deal will pop up at an auction.

Nice score Ben. I have a few Dansco albums but not a Type Set. Now decide, are you gonna fill it or flip it? :laughing7:

I am a coin collector for sure so I know which way I am leaning. I actually already have an old Whitman folder Type Set project that is more challenging to fill than the 7070 album.
