Drill holes are made to make big rocks into smaller rocks. a method used for thousands of years and still used to this day.

Further to DigIts reply, the holes were packed with explosive to do the cracking. An older method was to pound in a tight-fitting hardwood plug and then add water. The wood swelled and cracked the rock.
