Went fossil diving in a local North Florida river last Thursday (Mar 3) with a dive-buddy Cris. Water is dark and heavy currents so the hunting is just dig in the sand and feel around. After I'd made a hole about two feet deep I started wriggling my hand down deeper to try to find a known layer of bones and felt this. It's a molar from a Gomphothere which is a relative of Mammoths and Mastodons. It is 5 1/4" across the crown and weighs in at about 4 lbs.
