Hi.
Found this yesterday while picking up litter on a beach. It was among a large quantity of beach rocks washed up on the sand. I've been cleaning this beach daily for 5 years and never saw a golden metallic rock before. It's not magnetic - tried it on a heavy duty magnet.
It's quite heavy.
Any guess about what it could be? 20160301_150915.webp20160301_170205.webp20160301_165910.webp20160301_144527.webp

Possible meteorite? It would be worth it to have it tested by an expert. Sub 8-)

Thank you Subterranean. I posted it down i the meteorite thread and in that crazy big 'ask me what rock this is" thread. I can't think of what it could be washing in from the ocean. Doubt many ships carry brassy eggs lol.

It could be chalcopyrite with the brass/yellow color? Try a streak test it should leave a greenish black mark. HH

This was the only pic I could find of a well worn sample of this material. This one being more gold in color. The the color will vary depending on where it was formed and the associated minerals when formed. HH

The streak test it should leave a greenish black mark? Let us know the result please.

:tongue3:Kidney stone from a whale. That would be what it would look like as it passed through the system.

Ok I did the test - there was a black mark at first but then no mark? And it's weird but it smelled kind of bad. Is it because of using the toilet lid? 20160302_210752.webp20160302_210757.webp20160302_210808.webp

You may be right. Does it have a smell? Rubbing this gave off like burnt hair smell. Hard to describe. My hands smelled like it too.

May be it. I wouldn't describe the odor as sour but it does have one per thishttp://www.sandatlas.org/chalcopyrite/

Someone else here said dolomite but I can't see that. You may be right.

It's a good thing there are some smart people posting here so we can all learn new stuff. I thought it had something to do with a brass monkey... :dontknow:

Looks like iron pyrite to me, one that has been well beach tumbled. I find a lot of it on some MA beaches. Iron pyrite will leave a black streak. Also known as fools gold.

So far I'm leaning towards Chalcopyrite but I can't even scratch it with a knife. Isn't Chalco softer? Been reading a lot about it. Could it be manmade from a shipwreck? Going to do a density test when I get a scale.
