You could probably find gold with it, although it wouldn't be my first choice.

The Ace is made for coinshooting, although it will pick up nuggets.

They make specialty detectors for finding gold. One's that are specially built to handle mineralization better, and set to different freqencies to pick up gold better than a coinshooter.

Gold detectors are ALOT more sensitive than coinshooting machines and will probably drive you crazy if used in town. I have detected single strands of speaker wire 1/8 inch long with my gold unit.

So yes and no, in answer to your question.

Yeah, you might be able to locate larger, shallower nuggets, but its more likely you'll just pass right over the more plentiful smaller stuff.

All the major manufacturers make gold machines. Whites makes goldmaster, Fisher makes Gold Bug, Tesoro makes the Lobo super trac, Garrett makes the Scorpion and the stinger.

Minelab makes some great gold detectors for heavy mineralized ground, but they are pricey.

All of the above are good machines. Check into clubs in the area you want to search in, the members will have a pretty good idea of which machines will work best in their ground. Then take a look at ebay for a deal, or pay a little more from the manufacturer for great support and warranty after the sale. Kellyco is a sponsor for this site, and they usually have good prices too.

And, just my 2 cents fwiw. Of the 4 detectors Jeffro mentions here, I would vote the Tesoro Lobo Super Trac as the best of the 4.You'lll get both, very good depth AND you won't miss the shallower small nuggets with this machine! stvn.

Minelab has a couple of less expensive detectors (BFO & VLF). I've used my Soverign up in the Bradshaws a few times. If you wanna look try Arizona Outback's site. Yeah it's a plug, but when the owner does backflips to get your order to you, I think it's well deserved. In my humble experience the two best dealers out there are Kellyco and AZO. A lot of years dealing with these people and nothing but excellent service.

.......I have been hearing a lot from hunters out there about ..Garrett's Infinium..as being a good gold machine. So much i ordered one...==Jim==

...How does the...Minelab Soverign.. work for nugget hunting???????.....==Jim==

Gold Bug 2 for small (tiny) gold is good for the price, you can usually get a used one for under $450. The ACE is better for coins and gold rings (will show up as a pull tab usually).

You can use the ace 250 dor gold, but you have to turn down the sensitivity down because of the mineralization. If you want a good gold detector that won't cost an arm or leg, look on e-bay for the Minelab xt-18000, the eureka gold was designed after that one. I owned one, It will do you better than the garrett and has three frequencies instead of one like the gold bug or gold bug 2.

I use a Garrett Gold stinger with an attached audio amp to boost those very small targets. I use all metal mode to find a target, switch to non-motion to eliminate the hot rocks...in gold country I DIG ALL TARGETS! I use my detector and plastic Garrett gold pan in wet areas. I've found a lot of pesky shotgun pellets in the northeast streams were I live. I looked at the Fisher Gold manual and made the tuning pieces they suggested. I have some black sand in a 35 mm film container to adjust the ground balance when in the field. The 100 hours experience with your detector they suggest is really true-SD

The Whites GMT and the Goldbug 2 by far!Until you get into the Minelab 3000 and 4000,the MXT is no slouch either

I have done very well with the GMT.......

Well you turn it on, then take the little roundie thingie on the end of the stick & wiggle it back & forth ???
Naw, seriously. Have been out with nothing else, just ran it in all metal with very or no discrimination. 1 nug for about 300 boot nails & pieces of lead & junk. Note probably passed 5 or 6 that I couldn't hear. Point is if it's big enough & you're familiar with your machine you can make it work. I also use it to find junk buildups in the washes, where gold will be. ;D

Ace 250 is my back up,it will find nuggets . If ya want to find finergold ya should upgrade to something listed above in this forum.

................................What do you or any one think about the Garrett Infinium??????????==Jim==

Garrett sent me their newsletter. I believe it was the month before last. There was a short piece in it and a picture of a young gal who found a gold nugget in Alaska with her Ace 250. I suspect most detectors will find gold nuggets but like the man says, "its not my first choice" of detectors for hunting the nuggets.
I'm sure you'll find some and miss lots more. :D

WHat part of the country are you located in? Arizona? Alaska? The Pacific North West?

The Ace will find larger gold, but so will most all of them. They find gold rings don't they? As a rule of thumb a gold detector should have an adjustable ground balance, whether it be automatic or manual. I would not personally offer to sell an ACE as a gold prospecting detector. I like the Tesoro Lobo. The Garrett Infinium is nice, it is also an underwater machine but can get sort of heavy, even though you can remove the head and hang it on your belt. And to expand on what was said about the pull tabs and gold rings is that the pull tabs and gold have about the same conductivity, which is why gold will show as a pull tab.

Get a small piece of real gold and bury in dirt at different
depths and see what the 250 shows, before you spend a lot
of money. Mine picked up gold at 3 inches in sand. You can also
bench test in house with different metals, coins etc across in front
of coil. Observe the graphics and sounds, write them down and
use later in hunting. Good Luck !
