This was found in wet sand recently with a metal detector. Can anyone help ID it and possible date it? It appears to have some roman numerals on the inside of it. It holds to 14K acid. Pocket watch part perhaps?

Thank you.

Bezel to a hunting case pocket watch...Is my guess. A small watch, probably a ladies watch. The flat spot is the hinge side( they made room for the hinge on the outer cover that snaps down over it,). It may be gold, have it acid tested. Good chance that it is gold. It's hard to tell from pics but it looks pretty good.

They did make a few wrist watches with the cover like that too. But a lot of the small ladies pocket watches were used on necklaces. There was also a maker taking the old smaller cases and making wrist watches out of them....Either way, I'm convinced with no doubt that it's to a watch of some kind with an outer cover like a Hunting case.

But why would 3 and 5 be next to each other?

Those are the case numbers. Most cases have serial numbers on every part. or part of the serial number. Most all are numbered like that. Some of them are hidden or really hard to see. On the bezels a lot of times it's just the last 4 to 6 numbers from the serial number. The original number on the back cover may have been longer.

At least you know for sure if it's gold.

It almost looks to small to be a watch bezel, like how did it attach to the watch face? :dontknow:
