So long story short.. i was at a friends house.. helping him move and came across a very very old bible.. I picked it up an this coin fell out of the binding.. You could imagine my reaction.. I showed it to him.. I Said " im about 100% certain that's gold.. He laughed an said you wish...it looks like some kinda game token to me... an told me to keep it.. So ... Ive researched a little an seen an image of a Spanish silver 4 reale with the same front image (2nd image with the arrows in the middle ).. What is this coin!!!

My acid test kit confirms .. it is gold..

however even if it is a replica .. Its still a GOLD COIN !!!! =).. but still doesnt make since why it fell out of a bible from the late 1800s.. unless they was replicating them back then

It should be about 22 karat gold.

My gut tells me its real (if gold) but I am not familiar with this coin. We have a Spanish Cob forum that would love to see it. Please post over there. Thanks.

The bible might be from the 1800s, but it doesn't meen the coin was put in there then, but if it's Gold either way it's a good score.

The letters do look different comparing to the silver coin but maybe its a different coin?

Are you sure its solid gold? How many karats did it test?

ive re-tested the coin several times.. the scratch on the stone does nothing with 10k acid test solution .....but 14k solution turns it green so does 18 an 22

ive wore off a good chunk of the edge of the coin.. its still gold all the way threw.

If its 12K than its not real. Maybe its a jewelry piece.

Oh well had me going at first. Sure is pretty. I got to stop using my gut and start using my brain. A pic of the edges may help verify it as cast..

I dont know why someone would make a 12K fantasy coin thats similar to a silver coin unless it was for jewelry purposes. Either way its interesting.

Gold plated modern cast fake. (and a bad one at that) Good for a quick rush though.

edge of the coin is seamless ...smooth like a old penny ..no color difference

They could have smoothed off the casting seam. There is really no doubt about its non-authenticity if its only 12K gold. The only thing left to ID is for what purpose it was made. If its gold plated. it would be a tourist trinket. If its solid 12k-14K it may be a modern jewelry piece.

Not a coin, not counterfeit, most likely fantasy. But you could post in the Spanish cob section if you like. I have a feeling your friend doesnt generally give away gold and knows more than he said.. I dont know if its a game piece but more likely a souvenir or part of jewelry from a tourist destination.

Edit .. It is posted in the Spanish Cob forum as well

an another thing is.. the test kit im using i bought probably 8 - 10 months ago.. idk if the acid would go bad...??

Another real possibility is a fantasy coin from the SCA or a Middle Ages Renaissance Group. They actually mint silver and gold fantasy coins to be used at reenactments. If its gold, this seems most likely.
