Just got back from hunting a desolate area in Nevada. I found lots crystal and a few of these strange rocks. I don't no if it's pyrite crystal or not? It's is mainly black with black gold flakes. It was found in a wash. These black and gold flake come off rather easy.

My brother-in-law and I are new to the game. I googled pyrite crystal but it really does not look like it. It does not set off the Tesoro Lobo either.

I have no clue what this is. I can say I'm almost 100% sure it' not gold. But it is very strange. Any help telling me what this could be would be a great help.

thanks folks, goldhat

We figured on mica but when I googled it,it had a picture of a smooth piece of rock not a flaky stone. We can rule out pyrite and gold for sure.

It may be mica just not in a smooth form I'm guessin'

Looks like mica...

Thanks folks for the info..... I'm going to have to buy a book that will help me know what I'm lookin' at.

thanks again, goldhat

Two quick field tests for you to try.

1--Gold LOOKS like gold in the shade; nothing else does.

2--Pick out some of the suspect flakes and put them onto one thumbnail and mash them with your other thumbnail. If the flakes seem to flatten without breaking apart, it's probably gold. If the flakes crush apart easily............oh well. ;D Even in the raw state, gold is malleable and will "roll" out; even small flakes between your thumbnails.
