take them to a pawn shop. Most pawn shops have test devices that will let them know if its gold. An honest pawn shop will take it right to the tester instead of smelling it!

PPPssshhhh yeah right,ANY local pawn shop will tell you down to what karat it is.Go in,ask 'em how much they'll give you for it as scrap gold, then x's that by at least 5,then you'll know what it's worth.Good luck and H.H.

Something smells and it aint gold! Any legit place will tell you what is real or faux. Cladius.

I was told by a jeweler that gold doesn't have a smell, brass does. He said if you can smell a smell it is brass or some other metal, not gold.

copper, a common alloy, does have an odor as it oxidizes.
copper is commonly alloyed with gold among others.? simple test -----

potassium bichromite (potoshop)? ? 1 oz.
Pure nitric acid? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? 6 oz.
H2O (distilled)? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?? 2 oz.?

clean article carefully , especially clean any varnish vith remover, do not screpe or in any way physically disfigure the object for obvious reasons.,

apply? a drop of the above mixture? and check in one minute, then wipe it clean and check the color left.

Remember it is an acid, so do not get it on yourself or? your clothes. let alone your instrument.

Check it by its density... (doubt anyone will see this tho)

PART 1 (VOLUME)
First take a a measuring cup. fill it 1/2 full with water.(measure by ml)

Drop the necklace in

Calculate the difference. Minus what it is now and what it was when it was 1/2 full

--------------------
PART 2 (MASS)
Weigh the necklace by grams.

---------------------
PART 3
Divide with MASS(grams) over VOLUME(ml).

---------------------
If the number you get is near 19.3 it's gold.
If the number you get is near 10.5 its silver.
If the number you get is near 21.4 its platinum

(learned this in science =P)
