The leaf is an actual real leaf. I don't know how they make them for sure, but somehow they dip them in metal and then gold plate it. I have sold these and still have lots of stock. My personal favorite is the chilie, there are seeds in it that rattle. Oak and maple are also gorgeous, either solid or like yours.

nice! i have a maple one like HPD said. it has a red ribbon through it for a christmas ornament. very pretty
 

I have made some as ornaments, also, and believe it or not, many women like to wear pendants and earrings. There isn't too much work to "skeletonize" the leaf--I think they just dip them in acid for a bit.
