There was a story told to me approximately 26 years ago about a very large water oak tree with a medal spike drove through the middle of it. One end of the spike was pointing to the ground. The tree had what appired to be Greek writing on it. The tree was located around the Black Creek area around Brooklyn Mississippi. It was told to me that the tree is where outlaw gangs such as James Copeland, John Murrell, and Jean Lafitte would go to hold meetings and place treasure. The story also has Jessie James and Maxamil lion staying there. Has anyone ever heard of this? There are also other stories of De Soto leaving gold on the Leaf River area. Some of the gold was found.

Almost certainly not James, but KGC most likely. At the time of the war the south was almost exclusively protestant and everyone knew biblical Greek. The Knights of the Golden Circle were southern sympathizers who stole millions at the end of the war and burried it all to fund a second war. They used tree markings to tell where they burried it.
