Gold in colorado.

I was wondering if anyone else has spent much time prospecting in colorado. If so, did you have any luck? I haven't spent much time prospecting here but I'm gonna try to do some prospecting here this summer.

I plan on trying at some point. Once I can get a ride haha. I just don't really know where to go, I found this forum and my jaw dropped with all the possible info here. Do you know of anywhere to even start?

Hi Cherokee_Kidd,

Don't know where in Colorado your located but can tell you they are finding nice gold at Cache Creek. It's 17 miles north of Buena Vista at Granite, CO. Take the road behind the old Granite store to the pipeline road and follow it in. Panning, sluicing no permit needed. Highbanking with permit from BLM is ok just no dredging.

Good camping up at the meadows. Just take the main road left after coming back out from Cache Creek and it will take you to the meadows. Don't leave any equipment at the Cache Creek area over night as somethings have been stolen.

They are really finding some good stuff up there!!!

I have been to Cache Creek. There, unlike the Arkansas, you can actually find pickers. I'm planning on heading back up there next year when I get a chance and some better equipment.

I've heard nothing but good things about Cache Creek. I'm planning on going to Cache Creek . I know of a few other places where they've been finding some nice gold in colorado.

My wife's uncle Jim lived in Colorado back in the '70s and '80s and he found an old shack up the side of a mountain while elk hunting. The shack was built over the mouth of an old hardrock mine not very deep into the mountain. He said it looked like a one or two man diggings. He found a cap and ball revolver under a floor board and was able to scrape out enough gold on his trips to the old mine to pay for his trip and put a few jingles in his pocket. The old cabin couldn't be seen from any road and you had to know it was there to find it. He never saw another person up there he said. But he also said that there were a few claims up in the mountains where you might get shot at if you got too close. So I would advise using caution if you should discover an "abandoned" claim. Uncle Jim is deceased now and I never found out exactly where the cabin was. He took my wife and oldest son up there once but they haven't a clue where they were at the time. Monty

I know of another abandoned mine not far from Trinidad colorado. The old man who found it showed my brother in law where it was and asked my brother in law if we would help him search it. We agreed to split whatever we found with the old man and his family. The only problem I have with that mine is there are always bears around so it's not safe to really explore the area because the last time we were there we saw 6 bears.

Bears? Remember that when bear season rolls around. Monty

GoldDredger.com is a Colorado based forum with more info than you can imagine and NO I do not own, profit from it either BUT been a member for almost as long as this forum,20 years or so-John

I'll probably get back to colorado next summer to try my luck at cache creek. I'm moving to AZ so I'll be spending my winter detecting for gold and hopefully sluicing if we get enough water .

GoldDredger.com got it.

It would be nice to know someone else has done the work to make us all aware of where to look so we don't waste all our time for nothing Thanks !

I went panning out in clear creek canyon by blackhawk. Didn't find anything but it looked promising and I was definitely not the only on out there with a pan. They must be finding something.
The website for the gold prospectors of Colorado has some interesting info. I'm a member of the club and it gives you access to their claims. Haven't taken advantage of that yet. www.gpoc.com

My pans should be in today or Monday and I am planning on trying panning come spring. Of course the weather stays this way might try some earlier for practice.
