Looking for some insight on a flat button. I actually ended up finding 2 of them, except one has remnants of a gold color layer on top. They both say "Montgomery Newell Boston". They are about the size of a dime. Wasn't sure if these could have been gold plated at some point since the gold color remained after all these years. Thanks!

They are both nice. I love finding gold gilt buttons and yours cleaned up well. Good finds.

I think the backmark is that of a clothier, rather than a button manufacturer. Newell Montgomery was best known as a wholesaler of hardware, but I did find this regarding his interest in a fabrics company, from 1836-39. Page 209 here: History of the Town of Oxford, Massachusetts: With Genealogies and Notes on ... - George Fisher Daniels - Google Books This fits within the "golden age" of buttons, and matches the construction of yours. Yes, they were (thinly) gold plated back then (mixed with mercury).
