Wow I found a gold flake which looks like it has some silver with it. What you guys think!? ImageUploadedByTreasureNet.com1465160155.624835.jpgImageUploadedByTreasureNet.com1465160216.299395.jpgImageUploadedByTreasureNet.com1465160329.667000.jpgImageUploadedByTreasureNet.com1465160381.005727.jpg

Are you sure it's silver and not mercury?

Thats what I would like to know. I'm still new at this. It looks shiny like silver but again I'm not shure.

Like KCM implied....probably a mercury coating on that area. Keep it separate from other uncontaminated gold. In nature, gold with a high enough percentage of silver associated with it naturally alloys to a uniform silvery color though most native gold has a minor amount of silver and still retains it's gold color.

You can keep the mercury on there if you wish, or you can burn it off with a torch without hurting the nugget. However, do it outside and DO NOT BREATH THE FUMES!!

Even with that warning, PLEASE read lots more about the dangers of mercury fumes. ...It really doesn't look bad, ya' know.

Yep looks like mercury to me....did they mine that drainage, area historically?

Jmmm I'll do the research on the area about the mercury.

I love the looks of that area. It bespeaks lots of gold. Nice finds and best of luck in the future.

I'd say mercury until proven otherwise. It may be a gold/electrum halfbreed flake. A 3/4 oz gold/copper halfbreed nugget was found in WI last year. (pics posted here in another thread, MD section)

Todays finds. I think more gold flakes with mercury. It's been a while since I went prospecting. So what you guys think?

I can't even touch it? If I'm finding gold with mercury does that mean there could have been previous mining activity on the site??

I have read that they have been using mercury for mining gold since the Roman times. I thought this was something more of present times.

Just don't eat it or let the kids handle it..:laughing7:.. and Yes, there is a strong likelihood of previous mining.
