If he hid money, and survived jail, the money is gone whether found by a digger or recovered by him.

I thought about that, but what if he buried just slightly deeper then where the person who re-dug that spot.
then along with everyone else, altered the landscape forever.
what if when he got out the area looked so different , his markings were gone, and he couldn't find the spot again either.

add to that the Great Depression (1929-39) would have just ended, if
he served the full sentence.


who's land was it by then ?

the article says "Former Residence" so it wasn't his anymore.

was it buried in a spot that was being tilled, or built upon by 1929 ?


there are enough what if's , including,
the possibility of diggers loosing small items ,
to make a thorough detector search over the property worth someone locals time.
if it can happen.
