My heart almost stopped when I turned the soil over and saw gold and the shape of a coin.
I was hunting where some old houses were torn down and got a good signal, but it was a Mardi Gras Doubloon from 1971.
I also found a couple of buttons. One is a Cones Boss button.
There is also what looks to be some kind of copper or brass brooch.
I also found some square nails and some really old broken glass and plates.
I only found one memorial penny.
I feel like there has to be some silver dimes in the area. I only had an hour to hunt but am planning on going back. There's a lot of trash so the detecting is really tough.

LOL, That's a good one, Looks like you had a good day anyway.

Only an hour there is just enough time for you get familiar with the place. GO BACK! :D And neat that you dug a doubloon 30+ years old on Mardi Gras week 2009! :D Congrats on those finds~

Nana

Yep, those doubloons can really get your heart pumped up. Still a great find along with the other finds...get back there to detect more, you'll find something...silver dimes and more.

 RR

question that date say 1872 * on it -( not that its that old mind you -- but how did you track it to 1971?) the styling or stuff on the flip side?

I have a collection of doubloons. The 1872 date would be the year Rex was organized. The reverse would have the date of that years parade. I just checked mine...same doubloon but 1981.

 RR

as a former new orleans person --I thought the flip side had the date * -- I know the 1872 was the start up date in nawlins -- mobile ala has a very old mardi gras too you know --

I know that Mobile has Mardi Gras too, I don't have any doubloons from there.

Just looked at one site, $2.00 for a old doubloon. This site has some interesting stuff... http://www.cointradingpost.com/CrescentCityDoubloonTraders.html

Salty Dog, you have a keeper in that old doubloon, may be worth more that $2.00 in the future.

 RR

Still a cool find!
Can not be that many of them out there.....

Still a cool find!
I'd bet there's a lot of coins hiding in between the trash. Slip on a small coil and take your time and I bet you come up with a few.

That's correct ivan salis.
The flip side has Centennial Celebration 1872 - 1971.
The strange thing is the hour I had to spend detecting was before I was to have dinner with my Dad at the nursing home he is in.
And the dinner was a Mardi Gras themed dinner !!!
We are originall from New Orleans.
Thanks for viewing the post everyone.

Good finds Salty Dog for only 1 hour. Any of it silver? The spoon looks like it might be. I like the biggest piece, any idea as to what that is? A decoration of some sort that's for sure.

No silver 1liquigirl. But there's got to be some there. I'm going to keep looking.
The spoon looks like it is probably an aluminum toy spoon.
The big decorative piece I think is some kind of brooch. It looks like it had a place for a pin and hook on the back.
Good luck on your detecting, too.
