Greetings,

A friend of mine sent me this gold coin picture, in hopes of getting it identified.

It used to be his father's, but he's not sure if it was something his father found locally or bought somewhere.

Here's a pic:

Right on Crusader...

I came across some info in a previous post by JewelerDave - http://forum.treasurenet.com/index.php?topic=270292.0

I need to see this thing in person. I cant tell from his picture entirely but it looks struck to me. It has more detail than that fake in the post linked above.

I know that the area that his land is on used to have a french fort very close by - but he doesn't know where his father got it. Can't ask him now either...

Perhaps he found it near his home or... got suckered into buying a fake. hahaa

Not sure what fake Spanish Cobs would be doing in rural Canada though - if he did find it near his home.

I need to get out and detect his place! I just met the guy not long ago, but it could be the start of a good friendship! :) Now I just need to find him a detector...

I have some concerns about the color and look of this piece. Please PM BigCypresshunter and ask him to check it against his database of known counterfeits. Also, if you have a scale you should weigh the piece.

Best Wishes,

Buckleboy

Although I am certainly NOT an expert on cobs, I have to agree with Buckleboy on this one. It's just something about the edge of the coin, the little pits on the surface, and the color. :icon_scratch:

I just noticed this. I havent had the time to organize the collection of fakes but Ill search when I get a chance. A pic of the obverse and side view would help. Is it 23-24K gold?
