I found a 1919 penny while metal detecting around an old barn up in the middle of the woods. After using nothing more than soapy warm water to clean it, I noticed the coin had been scratched. Although a 1919 Lincoln is not a key date, I was very dissapointed with the scatches. When I dug the coin I was sure i hadn't scratched it, and with further study concluded that the coin was marked before it was lost. Now here's the rub... no pun intended... okay maybe a little pun... the scratches appear to surface transfers of a gold colored metal... Hmmm??... Is it possible for someone, "back in the day", to have been carrying a 1919 penny and a gold coin in the same pocket and would there ever be a case that the two coins rubbing together could leave markings from the softer metal on the harder coin? The reason I'm asking is because if the penny fell out maybe the gold coin did as well. I didn't have a chance to cover the area in detail, as it came a downpour and I hightailed it back to my truck.
But if my theory has merit, I could see another trip in the near future. Any info is appreciated. Sorry no pictures yet, my camera batteries were dead. I will post some soon if there is any interest in this post.
Thanks,
Greg
